Our colleague Claudio Javier García Ballano has defended his doctoral thesis, titled “Multi-Scale Evaluation of Energy Savings in Residential Buildings Before Their Transformation into Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (NZEBs): A Methodological Proposal Based on Open Data.”

Supervisors: Dr. Ana Ruiz and Dr. Carlos Monné.
Examination Committee: Dr. Jesús Cuartero, Dr. Fernando Martín-Consuegra, and Dr. María José Ruá Aguilar.

The thesis presents a tool that enables the estimation of potential energy savings in the residential building stock by transforming them into Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (NZEBs) using open data, specifically the Spanish Cadastre database. The results can be analyzed at various scales—building, block, census section, neighborhood, or city—and allow for comparisons between elements from different cities. The tool has been validated by comparing the estimated savings with real energy consumption data from renovated homes versus similar non-renovated ones.
